We would like to invite you to attend some FREE training. This course is an “Elderfriends
Volunteer Passsport”, run by Derbyshire County Council working in partnership with The
Volunteer Centre, Chesterfield and Age UK, Bolsover.
Elderfriends is a befriending service aimed at lonely and socially isolated people who are
over 50 years old and live in Chesterfield and NE Derbyshire.
Volunteers are recruited to befriend people on a ‘good neighbour’ basis. Volunteers are
involved in helping: visiting and keeping someone company, sharing a leisure activity,
shopping and running errands, driving and escorting to places such as shops, doctors,
Who can volunteer? Anyone over 16 who can spare a few hours a month. “You’ll need to be
patient, friendly, honest and reliable and in return you’ll receive training, support and travel expenses”.
It is a fully inclusive course for all participants which will explore, in creative and fun ways:
Person Centred Approach – listening skills, communication and engagment
Equality of Opportunity – self-awareness, “knowing me, knowing you”.
Personal Safety – “Do’s and Don’ts”, “What to do if..” Health & Safety
Keeping Yourself and Others Safe – safeguarding elderfriends and yourself, personal
boundaries, confidentiality and “what to do if you’re worried”
We are commencing the first course in September at The Arkwright Centre, Hardwick
Drive, Arkwright Town, Chesterfield, Derbyshire, S44 5BS on the following inclusive dates:
Tuesday 13th September, Wednesday 14th September, Tuesday 20th September,
Wednesday 21st September and Tuesday 27th September 2016.
Timing is 6pm until 9pm
All five elements of the training need to be completed in order to attain the Volunteer
Passport Accreditation. However, should you be unable to attend a particular session,
there should be an opportunity to attend that session at a later date.
